In December 2004, IHI (the Institute For Healthcare Improvement) unveiled the 100,000 Lives Campaign, which seeks to enroll up to 2,000 US hospitals in an 18-month effort to implement changes in patient care that have been proven to prevent avoidable deaths. At this stage of the effort, there are six interventions IHI and its founding partners are asking hospitals to make a reliable part of health care delivery: Rapid Response Teams, appropriate and reliable care for AMI, preventing Adverse Drug Events, preventing surgical site infections, central line infections, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Details are available at: http://www.IHI.org/IHI/Programs/Campaign/As the Campaign ramps up this winter (over 800 hospitals have enrolled so far!), IHI wants to explore effective ways to engage patients and families in this effort.  At minimum, they wish to develop some outreach materials that will enlarge the community of stakeholders, and offer some concrete steps patients and families can take to increase the odds that their health care is aligned with the optimal care at the heart of the 100,000 Lives Campaign.
